As you can imagine I watched it with great interest and from speaking to clients this week I have found that lots of you did watch it and it has resulted in some interesting conversations.
The programme followed a journalist Giles Coren as he went over to America to follow 3 different extreme diets for a week each, to see the effects.
Now all three of these extreme diets were followed by people who wanted to live as long as they could, 150 was the age that some of them wanted to live to.
The first diet was a calorie restricted diet, he met a couple who ate only very small amounts of food, they did food meditations to imagine eating rather than actually having some real food.
The first thing that struck me with them is that they didn't look the healthiest in my opinion, the first thing that struck me when Giles followed it was that he seemed throughly miserable, tired and cold.
The second diet was the paleo diet, now this was the closest to the way of eating that I follow, clean eating, the premise being that you eat real natural food, nothing processed, thinking back to how cavemen lived.
However it was taken to the extreme and showed people eating raw meat and killing their own lambs in the back garden, which is not the version of paleo that I am aware of!
The other thing that disturbed me was that he went to a fast food restaurant and bought a burger with no bun, the premise being that he could eat meat as much as he wanted. I don't think that burgers from a fast food joint with goodness knows what in them are going to do you any good!
The true paleo diet is to eat:
Non starchy vegetables and salad
Low GI fruits (berries are great)
Free range Meat, eggs and fish
Nuts and seeds
Healthy fats, olive oil and coconut oil
The third was a fruitarian diet, eating only fruit. This disturbed me as to restrict yourself to only fruit is to deny your body lots of things it needs to survive. Never mind all the sugar you are taking in!
All three diets were taken to the extreme to make a good television programme, I understand that, but to be honest who would want to live to 150 if you had to follow those diets?
How can you function day after day on a tiny number of calories, or only on fruit, or on raw meat???
The programme finished with a guy who was 113 and they interviewed him to see what his secret was.
It was a balanced diet with everything in moderation and exercise every day, he still walked a mile a day and if he couldn't due to the weather he went on a treadmill in his house.
Guess what his diet sounded like clean eating!
It left me thinking yes that is the secret, enjoy life, eat well and move.
Did you watch the programme? I would love to hear your thoughts?
Hit reply and tell me would you want to live to 150 and be like that couple on the calorie restricted diet??
Did it throw up any burning questions for you that you want answered? Please ask away if you have any questions after watching that?
