The Awards and What Happened!!!

11/27/2014

So this week I just had to write about my experience at the Whats on 4 Me awards.

Firstly I think that anyone who says they go off to an awards ceremony and don't mind if they don't win may be telling a slight porky!! As much as I know it was an amazing achievement to be a finalist in two categories with only 4 other finalists I did want to win so badly!!!

So off I went down to London all glammed up and nervous, with what I was going to say if I won whirring round in my head.

At 5.30pm they sat us all down and the organiser said a few words, she talked about how the finalists have all made a difference in peoples lives and how we were all inspiring people and that there had been 1000 nominations with just 94 finalists, and I have to admit it did give me a lump in my throat. I love what I do so passionately and when I really sit down and think of all the people who took the time to vote for me because I have made a difference or inspired them it makes me feel so appreciated.

So the awards then kicked off and I had to wait patiently as my categories were towards the end. When the time came for The Best Fitness Group my heart was pounding, hands a bit sweaty....you get the feeling......” and the runner up is Keep fit with Kelly from Sutton Coldfield” . Yes I couldn't believe it, to me getting runner up felt every bit as good as winning as I stood up to the round of applause.

At the end I had photos with my award and was beaming from ear to ear as I think you can see. A few glasses of champagne later and off home I headed with my award held tightly in my arms.

I have to confess I had an addiction!!!!!

So those of you have read my blog posts before will have read about my previous life as a sugar addict and my ambition to rid myself of the addiction!!!

If you haven’t read about this before then let me enlighten you!

My name is Kelly and I was a sugar addict.......toast with jam for breakfast, biscuits for breakfast, whole bars of chocolate (and I mean jumbo size) of an evening, massive easter eggs at easter (so much so that last year I had a meltdown as Jamie hadn’t bought me a big enough egg), never opening a packet of biscuits without eating at least half and it goes on and on........

I would imagine you get the idea, I loved sugar and it was a drug to me, I truly believe I was addicted and that means I have now got a sugar addict daughter as she has copied my actions. So after having Jude in May this year and realising that even with exercising throughout my pregnancy I had gained more weight than I would like, something had to change. I also read and care so much about my diet, I eat clean healthy meals as a whole and detest processed dinners and fast food, but it was the chocolate and cakes that were getting to me. I know that sugar ages you and as I am not getting any younger so want to avoid that, I also know about the impact sugar has on your energy levels, giving you that sugar high but then the crash. Going back to work 3 months after giving birth and now having 2 kids to look after I knew I would need all the energy I could get.

So when Jude was 2 weeks old I decided that was it and sugar was going from my diet. As I said I didn't really have to worry about the hidden sugar which is in so many foods as on the whole I wasn't eating them anyway, it was all the refined sugars that I was going to cut out.

So I just did it, I went cold turkey and refused to eat so much as a biscuit. For me if I have a tiny bit I want more and so while I know some people can be really disciplined and have it in moderation, for me that doesn't work so it had to be all or nothing.

So for the last five months I have sat in restaurants while others around me have eaten desserts, I have resisted all the biscuits that are in my house for the kids and hubby, I have said no when biscuits and cakes have been passed round at baby groups I go to, I have been to a spa hotel and watched people have the most fantastic afternoon tea with beautiful cakes and said no when my husband suggested we have it as a treat, I have been to birthday parties and said no to the chocolate cake  and today as I write this I have visitors coming this afternoon with cakes and again I have said don't bring one for me.

Do I feel proud of myself and a bit smug??? Yes I do to be honest as I never thought I would ever have been able to resist and so when I watched people eating all those cakes at afternoon tea, I just think about the headache and lethargic sick feeling I would have got afterwards, as I could never have just had one or two, I would have had to finish the plate!!!!

I have relaxed slightly in the last couple of weeks and had a couple of tiny sweet things but the difference is now that I can have something small and not feel like I need to gorge. But to be honest I haven't really enjoyed the couple of things I have eaten, they taste too sweet now. So how am I going to approach Christmas which has always been a sugar fest for me......I am going to approach with caution and hope that I can be strong and not eat all the pies!!!!!

ps I will keep you posted!!!!!!

So today marks World Diabetes Day (WDD) and this year the International Diabetes Federation is promoting healthy living and diabetes as its theme to combat this worldwide problem.

Type 2 Diabetes is on the rise and healthy living and exercise has been shown to be the best way to treat and prevent Type 2 Diabetes and all the health complications associated with it.

I was very surprised to read that the number one cause of amputations in the UK is diabetes and it’s also the number three cause of blindness not to mention heart disease, kidney disease and strokes.

So with this in mind here is my Top 5 ways to prevent yourself from getting Type 2 Diabetes.

  1. Keep your weight down - This is the biggest factor and by just losing between 5-10 percent of your body weight you can cut your chances of developing diabetes in half!
  2. Get active - Doing some exercise daily if you can. Whether that means joining a class, going for a          walk or swimming. The key is to find something you enjoy doing and then do it!!
  3. Stop smoking - Smokers are roughly 50 percent more likely to develop Type 2 diabetes
  4. Eat a healthy diet - So cutting out all the processed food, skipping the sugary drinks and sticking to water, eating good fats and cutting out the bad fats will all help with reducing the risk.
  5. Drink in moderation - Remembering the word moderation here and asking yourself truly how much you drink. If your wine glasses hold half a bottle of wine then a couple of glasses a day is not great!!!

I think in essence if you eat a healthy diet and get active then your weight will look after itself and this will not only see you looking and feeling better but greatly reduce your chances of getting Type 2 diabetes and all the nasty complications that can bring.

As always if you want to ask my advice on diet or exercise always feel free to drop me a line.

Last Friday the 24th we had a fundraiser at Falcon Lodge Community Centre to raise money for the Funny Factory Christmas Party. We had a fantastic night of Zumba fun and you can read all about it in this article. We managed to raise £253 so I think that was a great success!!!!

Look out next year for other fundraisers that we will be doing.
