Do you want to live till 150?

3/30/2015

Who watched the programme last week on Wednesday night called Eat to Live Forever?

As you can imagine I watched it with great interest and from speaking to clients this week I have found that lots of you did watch it and it has resulted in some interesting conversations.

The programme followed a journalist Giles Coren as he went over to America to follow 3 different extreme diets for a week each, to see the effects.

Now all three of these extreme diets were followed by people who wanted to live as long as they could, 150 was the age that some of them wanted to live to.

The first diet was a calorie restricted diet, he met a couple who ate only very small amounts of food, they did food meditations to imagine eating rather than actually having some real food.

The first thing that struck me with them is that they didn't look the healthiest in my opinion, the first thing that struck me when Giles followed it was that he seemed throughly miserable, tired and cold.

The second diet was the paleo diet, now this was the closest to the way of eating that I follow, clean eating, the premise being that you eat real natural food, nothing processed, thinking back to how cavemen lived.

However it was taken to the extreme and showed people eating raw meat and killing their own lambs in the back garden, which is not the version of paleo that I am aware of!

The other thing that disturbed me was that he went to a fast food restaurant and bought a burger with no bun, the premise being that he could eat meat as much as he wanted. I don't think that burgers from a fast food joint with goodness knows what in them are going to do you any good!

The true paleo diet is to eat:

Non starchy vegetables and salad

Low GI fruits (berries are great)

Free range Meat, eggs and fish

Nuts and seeds

Healthy fats, olive oil and coconut oil

The third was a fruitarian diet, eating only fruit. This disturbed me as to restrict yourself to only fruit is to deny your body lots of things it needs to survive. Never mind all the sugar you are taking in!

All three diets were taken to the extreme to make a good television programme, I understand that, but to be honest who would want to live to 150 if you had to follow those diets?

How can you function day after day on a tiny number of calories, or only on fruit, or on raw meat???

The programme finished with a guy who was 113 and they interviewed him to see what his secret was.

It was a balanced diet with everything in moderation and exercise every day, he still walked a mile a day and if he couldn't due to the weather he went on a treadmill in his house.

Guess what his diet sounded like clean eating!

It left me thinking yes that is the secret, enjoy life, eat well and move.

Did you watch the programme? I would love to hear your thoughts?

Hit reply and tell me would you want to live to 150 and be like that couple on the calorie restricted diet??

Did it throw up any burning questions for you that you want answered? Please ask away if you have any questions after watching that?

I'm every women

Hi

It was International Women's day at the weekend and that really got me thinking.

I am so lucky to stand up in front of hundreds of women each week, all with their own struggles, issues and body images etc and deliver my classes.

I am lucky as I get to connect with all these wonderful women all the time and I learn so much from everyone who comes to class.

Quite often people will chat to me before and after class and will mention something that inspires me, or makes me smile or just makes me think wow that really made sense!

I think this is one of the reasons group exercise classes are so popular with women, it lets us all come together and certainly in my classes no one judges or compares, we just all have one common aim and that is to get some exercise.

I have learnt over the years though that lots of women come to my classes as an escape as well. It may be to escape from the stress of work and family life and just shut off for an hour or two, or to have some me time, or for the social aspect as they are alone at home.

I don't want to sound all new age here but as women I think we are pretty wonderful and do an amazing job that we don't always give ourselves credit for.

Lots of us are wearing about five different hats, I know I am wearing a business owner, wife, mom, daughter, cleaner and cook hat most days of the week.

However I love to feel needed so I like to feel I am doing it all and being superwomen.

I am not great at giving myself credit for it though and from the chats I have with women so many are the same as me.

As a mom to a daughter I really want to set a good example to her of what a strong women is and want her to very much stand on her own two feet.

So the theme behind my blog this week is for all you wonderful women to stop today and think about all the things you do for everyone else and maybe think when was the last time you did something for yourself?

Hit reply and let me know how you make sure you make time for you.

Perhaps its going to the gym or to a class? Or maybe you make sure you get to a spa every so often?

I would love to hear what your favourite way of taking time out is (I could do with some tips!!)

Lets get fit for Spring

So spring is nearly here!

I don't know about you but I love the changing seasons, I always really love it when the nights get lighter and I have to say I think it makes coming out to classes loads easier when its brighter at night.

I also think this is a great time of the year to kickstart our diet and fitness.

Hands up if you have been hibernating all winter under those extra layers and are now starting to think about that bikini body, waxing and pedicures!!!

The winter can have a negative effect on your schedule with dark nights and dark mornings, the cold and rainy weather puts a downer on your energy levels and all you want to do is stay inside where it's warm and cosy and you put off working-out so much that it becomes the norm.

All that inactivity during the winter will make you put on a few pounds and make it harder to get back into the swing of things but there are some cheats you can use to get used to working out again.

Find a friend to work out with

Having a workout buddy helps you stay motivated during your workouts and also to keep going by not wanted to let each other down.

Try a new class

Starting a new class keeps you from getting stuck in a rut and just going through the motions - Your body will be tested by trying new exercises and you can get great results by keeping your body on it’s toes. Check out the latest new class to hit my timetable, Piloxing, a fusion of boxing, pilates and dance!

Get outdoors and workout with the kids

Now the summer is coming the weather is more welcoming for runs around the park or joining a Bootcamp or just a good long family walks or bike ride at weekends.

Early morning classes

Now that the mornings are brighter there’s more encouragement to throw back the duvet and get out there for a workout. They say that in the morning our body burns even more calories!

Cleaning up your diet

Eating well is so much easier in the summer when we can enjoy lots of lovely salads and barbecued meats. Adopt a healthy eating plan now to help lift your mood and shift those pounds. When we are eating good food it does wonders not only for your waistline but for the way you feel. The people on my Hot Body Diet say that they feel so much better, have more energy, less ailments, better mood etc etc.

So I think that March is a great month to spring clean your fitness and eating goals!
